SUMMARY:Volunteer for Garden Planting at Thornhurst Riverfront Park
DESCRIPTION:Join North Pocono CARE and Thornhurst neighbors to install a native pollinator garden at the new Thornhurst Riverfront Park. \nNorth Pocono CARE is the sponsor of the 100% native garden at the soon to be open Thornhurst Riverfront Park. \nOn Saturday\, October 24th\, we need volunteers to help us plant over 26 native plant\, shrub and tree species in the park’s 900 square feet garden. \nThere’ll be bee balm\, blazing star\, blue vervain\, golden alexanders\, common milkweed\, red chokeberry\, silky dogwood\, and more. All indigenous to the Poconos and able to establish a pollinator garden along the Lehigh River in the heart of the community. \nThe variety of plants was chosen to add four season botanical interest and beauty to the site. Educational signage and plant labels will follow. \nYou don’t need to be experienced to join in. Family-friendly volunteer tasks will include: \n\nPlanting hundreds of native flower starts\nPlanting native trees and shrubs\nWeeding\nSpreading mulch\n\nRSVP to volunteer by October 17 to npcare@att.net with the number of people and any questions. Please include your name and phone number plus the number of adults and children joining. Children under 16 must have a parent present. (RSVPs help in the event of inclement weather and to estimate snacks and drinks! ) \n\nSnacks and drinks will be provided\nWear appropriate attire for getting dirty\nBring your own trowel and/or shovel\, garden gloves…and a grin\n\nThornhurst Township’s plan for the park facilities reflects the many voices that contributed to the public input processes including the desire to highlight interesting and unique environmental aspects of the site and to provide appropriate access to the Lehigh River for area residents. Once established\, the rain garden will be a site that North Pocono CARE and other ecologically minded community organizations (such as master gardeners) can use for future educational community events.
